Siberian Husky Breed History

The Siberian Husky is a breed of dog with origins in Siberia, or the icy and harsh regions of Russia. The type of individuals that first domesticated and utilized the Huskies were the Chukchi people – a tribe of indigenous individuals in the region of Northeast Asia.

The Chukchi utilised the Huskies as a means of pulling sleds for the tribe, and had their strength enable the Chukchi to travel long distances across the snowy lands; the dogs were able to perform the task of transporting light loads across expansive areas of frozen land, and required little food in return for such services.

When introduced to Alaska in the early 20th century, the Huskies gained renown for their abilities as sled dogs. Not only did they succeed in numerous sled races, but they gained legendary status for their role as an essential means of transportation in a relay that transported medical supplies across nearly 700 miles in five and a half days in response to an outbreak of diphtheria in Nome, Alaska in 1925. As a result of these impressive accomplishments, attention was directed towards the Siberian Husky, and the dog breed became recognised as one of the most resilient and versatile breeds of dogs overall.

Caring For a Siberian Husky Puppy

How to Choose a Responsible Siberian Husky Breeder

Finding Siberian Husky breeders is relatively easy, whether online or in person. Choosing a responsible breeder from the many available is the first step toward acquiring a healthy, happy Siberian Husky puppy.

Breeders will have a well-thought-out strategy for breeding their dogs. The intention is to increase the number of desirable traits, and minimise the number of undesirable, and even harmful, traits!

Seek out Siberian Husky breeders registered with a breeding organisation that enforces strict rules and regulations regarding the care and raising of the animals. This way, you know the breeders are accountable for how they treat their dogs.

Siberian Husky FAQ

No. While Siberian Huskies are independent in nature, leaving them alone for extended periods is not ideal. Huskies are pack animals by nature and thrive on companionship, be it with humans or other dogs. Extended isolation can lead to separation anxiety or depression.

While they're adapted to cold climates, they can live in warmer areas if given proper care, shade, and hydration.
