Breeders ID Number

Finding a registered breeder isn’t always easy. One of the main ways of verifying that a breeder you are dealing with is a registered breeder is through a breeder ID number. You can verify an RPBA Breeders ID Number here: Verify Breeder

If you look at most online listings of cats or dogs for sale, you’ll see that they will include a breeders ID number.

In New South Wales, every breeder or organisation that is looking to sell or rehome a cat or dog must list an approved identification number in the advertisement. These identification numbers may include:

  • Microchip number
  • Breeder ID number
  • Rehoming organisation number

Breeder ID numbers in NSW can be obtained free of charge from the NSW Pet Registry.

In Queensland, breeders or organisations must use a supply number. A supply number can be one of the following:

  • Breeder ID number
  • Breeder exemption number
  • Accreditation number (from an approved entity)
  • Unique number that identifies a person as a recognised interstate breeder

Breeder ID numbers in QLD can be obtained for free from the QLD Government site.

In South Australia, anyone selling dogs or cats that they have bred are required to register as a breeder with the Dog and Cat Management Board (DCMB). Advertisements for dogs and cats for sale or adoption must include the breeder ID number within the advertisement.

These new rules apply to all advertisements, including any form of online advertising. Advertisements in states outside of NSW, QLD, or SA do not need to include a breeder ID number or supply number, unless there is a state-specific requirement for one.

There are also state-specific penalties for failing to comply with these requirements. However, simply registering as a breeder does not mean that breeders are obliged to uphold any standards for the care and raising of their animals.

You may notice that many advertisements also include an RPBA number, which is obtained by registering as an RPBA breeder member. Responsible Pet Breeders of Australia was formed to provide guidelines, a code of ethics and standards and recognition to all breeders.

By choosing to support breeders who are registered with RPBA, you are helping ensure the absolute best conditions and upbringing for all dogs and cats that are bred and sold, for the welfare of the animals and new owners alike.

Recognition and support for breeding responsibly at every life moment.

Become an RPBA Member

To become a registered cat or dog breeder with RPBA, click on the “Join Now” button below.

You will be brought to a payment page where you may choose either a monthly or yearly membership option.

Once this step is completed, you will automatically be redirected to the RPBA member registration page where you will fill in your details. If you are not immediately redirected to this page, please check your email and spam folder for the link.

Once you have completed the registration form, you will also be asked to provide pictures of your accommodations for your pets, as well as proof of identity. After finalising your registration, we will review your application and verify whether you comply with your Code of Ethics.

After applying, you should hear back from us within 24 hours, but we ask that you give us up to two weeks so that we can ensure the correctness of all information.

Once you are registered with Responsible Pet Breeders of Australia RPBA, we will provide you with a breeder number. This same breeder number will be searchable in our online database for dog and cat breeders

You may then include your RPBA breeder number in your advertisements so that prospective buyers know that you are a breeder who loves and cares for their pets.

Please keep in mind that we may refuse membership to any breeders whom we feel do not uphold state legislation or our Code of Ethics. Any denied membership application will be eligible for a refund.

Customer reviews

Hanna

They have great resources for first time breeders like myself which made me feel a lot more comfortable knowing I have their ongoing support and guidance.

The discounts and specials they offer members saved me 10 times more than their membership fee. A no brainer. And the support from fellow RPBA breeders has been reassuring and welcoming too. Very happy!

RPBA has been excellent to deal with from start to finish. My application was processed within 24 hours and their breeder offerings are great.

I’ve already used some of their templates and the learning documents they provide also has made it easier for me to educate new families on health matters and ongoing care of the pups once they leave our home. Great to be part of a proactive and supportive group.
