Canine Stud Contract

Every responsible breeding decision deserves a written agreement. Whether you’re lending out your prized male or arranging a stud service for your dam, having a canine stud contract in place is one of the smartest moves a breeder can make. A handshake might feel friendly, but when puppies are involved, clear paperwork matters.

What Is a Canine Stud Contract?

A canine stud contract is a written agreement between two breeders: the owner of the male dog (the stud) and the owner of the female (the dam). It lays everything out in black and white—what each party expects, what each side agrees to do, and how the mating and its outcomes will be handled.

Think of it as your rulebook for the arrangement. It clarifies things like how much the service costs, who pays for travel, and what happens if the mating doesn’t take. It can even set terms around things like number of puppies, paperwork, and future use of the sire’s bloodline.

Too often, breeders skip this step and end up caught in disagreements about payment, puppy pick, or health guarantees. A well-written dog stud agreement prevents that from happening in the first place.

What Should a Canine Stud Contract Include?

A well-drafted canine stud contract doesn’t need fancy legalese, but it must cover the practical bits that matter most. Whether you’re a seasoned breeder or sorting your first mating, it pays to put pen to paper on the following details:

  • Stud fee terms – Is the payment a fixed fee, or are you offering a puppy back in lieu? When and how should payment be made?
  • Health screening results – Both dogs should arrive with clear documentation. Include results for hip scores, DNA testing, vaccinations, and parasite checks.
  • AI or natural mating logistics – Will the dam travel to the stud, or will semen be collected and sent? Clarify who covers travel, accommodation, or vet procedures.
  • Litter expectations – What happens if the mating doesn’t take? Will there be a second attempt? Some contracts include a return service clause.
  • Registration and paperwork – Outline who registers the litter and how microchipping, pedigree certificates, and names will be handled.
  • Signatures and witnesses – While not always legally required, a signed agreement with clear dates and breeder details adds weight and professionalism.

These aren’t just formalities—they protect the dogs, the breeders, and the puppies that follow.
