Signs of Labour in Dogs

Quick Answer:

The most common signs of labour in dogs include nesting behaviour, restlessness, a drop in body temperature below 37.5°C, loss of appetite, panting, and visible contractions. These signs signal that your dog is entering early or active labour and needs a calm, prepared space to whelp safely.

Understanding the signs of labour in dogs helps ensure a calm, safe, and well-supported whelping. Whether you’re a first-time breeder or an RPBA member preparing for another litter, knowing what to expect during dog labour is key to helping your dog through the process and giving her puppies the best start.

What Are the Stages of Labour in Dogs

Whelping unfolds in three distinct stages. Knowing what happens during each will help you recognise when labour starts and when your dog needs hands-on support or veterinary attention.

  1. Early Labour
This stage can last 6–12 hours. Hormone changes begin preparing the body for birth. Your dog may become restless, dig at bedding, or pace. A drop in body temperature (below 37.5°C) often occurs 12–24 hours before the first puppy arrives.
  2. Active Labour
Contractions become visible. The dog may lie on her side or strain in intervals. A clear or slightly blood-tinged fluid may appear. Delivery usually begins with the first pup within a couple of hours of active labour.
  3. Delivery and Afterbirth
Each pup arrives with a gap of anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes. Afterbirth (placenta) typically follows each puppy. Keep count and make sure one placenta passes per pup.

What Are the Top Signs of Labour in Dogs

Recognising the early signs of labour in dogs helps you prepare and stay calm when the moment arrives. Keep an eye out for the following changes:

  1. Drop in Body Temperature
A healthy pregnant dog’s temperature usually ranges between 38.3°C and 39.2°C. A drop below 37.5°C often signals that labour will begin within 12 to 24 hours.
  2. Loss of Appetite
Many dogs stop eating in the final 24 hours before whelping. If your dog refuses food and shows other signs on this list, labour may be near.
  3. Nesting Behaviour
Your dog may scratch at bedding, dig, or try to build a “nest” in a quiet spot. This is a strong instinct triggered by early labour.
  4. Panting, Shivering or Pacing
Mild tremors, panting, and general restlessness can all indicate that contractions have begun or are close.
  5. Vomiting or Clear Discharge
A clear, slightly sticky vaginal discharge can appear. Some dogs may vomit due to stress or changing hormone levels.
  6. Licking the Vulva
Dogs often lick to clean and soothe themselves as labour progresses. It can also indicate fluid release or discomfort.
  7. Visible Contractions
As labour advances, you may notice abdominal tightening, pushing, or straining, especially once active labour begins.

How to Support a Dog During Labour

As your dog enters labour, your role is to offer calm, steady support. Here’s how to help create a safe, stress-free birth environment:

Set Up a Whelping Area
Choose a quiet, dim space away from household noise. Use clean bedding, whelping mats, and sides to contain pups safely. The mother should feel comfortable and undisturbed.

Stay Calm and Observant
Your dog will pick up on your energy. Sit nearby, keep your voice soft, and observe her progress without crowding. Note the time of each pup’s arrival and any complications.

Know When to Call a Vet
Always keep your vet’s number handy. Contact them if:

  • Straining lasts more than 30 minutes with no puppy
  • Over 2 hours pass between pups
  • The mother shows signs of pain, disorientation, or distress

Have Your Whelping Kit Ready
Include:

  • Gloves
  • Clean towels
  • Thermometer
  • Bulb syringe
  • Disinfectant
  • ID bands
  • Scales
  • Notepad for logging births

RPBA offers a Premium Whelping Kit that equips breeders with all the tools needed to oversee each stage of whelping, from initial preparations to post-birth care.

Stay With Her But Let Her Lead
Some dogs want you close; others prefer space. Follow her lead while watching for signs that she needs help.

What Are the Warning Signs During Dog Labour

Even in a healthy pregnancy, things can go wrong. Knowing what’s normal  and what’s not can save your dog’s life. Keep an eye out for these red flags:

  1. Prolonged Straining
If your dog pushes hard for over 30 minutes without delivering a puppy, she may need veterinary help.
  2. Long Gaps Between Puppies
It’s normal for breaks of up to 2 hours between pups, but anything longer may point to trouble. Call your vet if you’re unsure.
  3. Green or Bloody Discharge Before First Puppy
A greenish discharge before the first pup could mean the placenta has detached early, a sign of distress.
  4. Visible Pain or Discomfort
Heavy panting, whining, pacing, or collapsing during labour can signal complications. Don’t wait, contact your vet.
  5. Weak or Unresponsive Puppies
Newborns should move and vocalise within moments. If not, clear their airways gently and stimulate them with a towel. Seek emergency help if they don’t respond.
  6. Unusual Smells or Behaviour Post-Birth
Foul smells, fever, or disinterest in pups after delivery may point to infection or retained placenta.
