Dog on Heat: How Often Do Dogs Go in Heat? A Guide for First-Time Breeders
By: Responsible Group Australia Updated 1 September, 2026
If you’re new to dog breeding and your female dog is approaching her first season of breeding (also known as being an “entire” or unspayed female dog), you likely have many questions. One of the first and most important questions any new dog breeder should ask is: what is the heat cycle for dogs? Understanding this cycle will allow you to better prepare for breeding your dog. If not handled correctly, this cycle could lead to failed breeding attempts or unnecessary stress for your dog.
Read on to find out everything a first-time dog breeder needs to know about when a dog is on heat.
What Does It Mean When a Dog Is "On Heat"?
Being on heat, also known as being in season or in estrus, means that a female dog is fertile and able to fall pregnant. This period occurs due to hormonal changes in the dog’s body.
Where dogs are different from humans is that they do not have a monthly cycle. Unlike some other animals, however, dogs do not exhibit heat seasonally but rather follow their own cycle for each female dog. Knowing this cycle is half the battle in terms of breeding dogs appropriately.
How Often Do Dogs Go in Heat?
This is a question that most first-time dog breeders will ask. The answer is that it varies. However, there are some general guidelines regarding how often female dogs will come into season.
Dogs will typically come into season every 6 months on average, or once every 4 to 5 months on average. However, there can be some variation between dogs of different breeds. Some dogs may come into season every 4 months while others may take as long as a year to cycle once. Smaller dog breeds will typically cycle more frequently than giant breeds of dogs. For example, miniature pinschers will cycle every 4 to 5 months while giant breeds may only come into season once a year.
A dog’s age also matters. Most dogs will experience their first heat cycle between 6 and 12 months of age. However, giant breeds can take up to 18 to 24 months to reach first season. A dog’s cycles can be irregular at first before they settle into their established cycle.
Since every dog will be different, one of the best things a dog breeder can do is to keep track of each dog’s heat cycle. After a few cycles (between 2 and 3), a dog breeder will be able to accurately predict the time it will take for a dog to reach mating with another breeding dog.
The Four Stages of the Canine Heat Cycle
A complete heat cycle isn’t just the days you notice bleeding from your female dog’s vulva. There are four stages to a female dog’s heat cycle:
- Proestrus (approx. 7-10 days): The female’s vulva will swell and there will be bloody discharge. Male dogs will become interested in the female, but she will refuse to mate with any males.
- Estrus (approx. 5-10 days): The colour of the female dog’s discharge will lighten. This is the fertile period of the cycle during which the female will allow the male to mate with her, and during which she will ovulate.
- Diestrus (approx. 60-90 days): The female is no longer receptive to males. Whether or not the female became pregnant during estrus, this period occurs. The hormones in her body will return to normal.
- Anestrus: The female rests during this stage of her cycle until the next heat cycle begins.
The period of visible signs from the female’s heat cycle last approximately 2-4 weeks in total, although the fertile period (during which she can become pregnant) is shorter.
Signs Your Dog Is Coming Into Season
First-time breeders should watch for:
- Swelling of the vulva
- Blood-tinged or straw-coloured discharge
- Increased urination and urine marking
- Increased attention from male dogs
- Behavioural changes — restlessness, clinginess, or nervousness
- “Flagging” — holding the tail to one side when approached (a sign of receptivity during estrus)
What This Means for First-Time Breeders
When it comes to the heat cycle of a female dog, there are a number of factors that can have a direct impact upon her welfare and the outcomes of that heat cycle:
- The timing of the mating will rely upon the recognition of ovulation – something that can be tested for via progesterone tests performed by a veterinarian.
- The age of the dog and the number of heat cycles she has experienced are factors in recommending that dogs not be mated until at least their second or third heat cycle and once they have fully matured physically.
- Should there be the chance for unplanned matings during these cycles, the presence of an entire male dog nearby presents a risk of accidental mating and subsequent pregnancy.
- Additionally, any issues relating to the health of the female dog with regard to her heat cycles are issues that should be discussed with a veterinarian, especially if the cycles are irregular, never appear by 18-24 months of age, or are either too long or short in relation to the average female dog.
As such, because there are various legal and welfare responsibilities attached to such a stage in the dog’s life, it is recommended to learn this information within the context of an established breeding community – rather than through guesswork or within forums dedicated to dog breeding.
